Animal vs. Vehicle = no one wins....

HOW TO AVOID DEER CRASHES
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, deer account for roughly 1.5 million vehicle crashes in the U.S. each year, killing about 150 motorist, injuring tens of thousands more and racking up more than $1 billion in insurance costs.  As the deer population continues to climb, so do your chances of hitting one -- especially if you drive in rural areas between dusk and dawn.  The expansion of developments encroaching upon rural and traditional wildlife territories have also lead to the dramatic increase in animal/vehicle collisions.
You can significantly reduce your risk of dangerous encounters by heeding these tips:

Step1
Stay alert. Always watch for deer, especially from dusk to midnight, before and after dawn and particularly on two-lane roads. Eighty percent of all deer-car crashes occur on two-lane roads during these times when deer are most active.

Step2
Be extra vigilant in the fall. While deer crashes can occur at any time of the year, October, November and December see a huge spike in the number of deer-car crashes because of deer migration and the mating season.

Step3
If you see only a single deer, remember that deer seldom travel alone. Assume that other deer are nearby. Watch for the reflection of their eyes and their silhouettes along the shoulder of the road.

Step4
Heed deer-crossing zones. They are a first alert that you are entering known deer country. Use your high beams when there is no oncoming traffic to see as far ahead down the road as you can and observe the speed limit.

Step5
If you see a deer stepping in or near your path, brake firmly but stay in your lane. Blast your horn to encourage the animal to move on. Never swerve to avoid hitting a deer. Rolling over your car or crashing into another vehicle or a stationary object can be more dangerous than hitting the deer.

Step6
If hitting the deer is unavoidable, slow down and grasp the steering wheel firmly with both hands. Take your foot off the brake at the moment of impact to allow the front end of your vehicle to lift up and enable the deer to go under your car--instead of through your windshield.

Step7
If you hit a deer, immediately report the accident to the police. If the deer is injured, don't try to touch or help it. A frightened and wounded deer may hurt you and further injure itself.

Now with all those tips in mind there is another great device that is a good $5 purchase I HIGHLY recommend you consider putting on ALL your vehicles not just the ones you think you will encounter a deer in... Put it on your car, your spouses car, your mom's car, your teens car for sure, as cheap as they are you can't go wrong!

Deer Whistles

These guys are inexpensive and can be found most anywhere, big box stores, auto stores, all your local -- mart & bullseye stores etc...  Two come in a package and they are easily affixed to the front end of your car.  I actually affixed mine to my grill on both my Durango and my Yukon however on my truck they had to go along the front bumper and on my daughters Mustang they are in the same location.

Now for the fun!!! I am giving away a set of deer whistles!!!! All you have to do to enter is make a comment on this post!  Only one entry per person and via comment below by midnight on Thursday 10/20! I am a firm beliver in these little suckers it cut our severe animal strikes at my previous employer nearly by 90%..

Stay warm (it is a chilly here today in Oklahoma) and stay safe peeps!
Get to commenting below I will announce the winner on Friday October 21st!

Sometimes you still just have to be a GIRL!

So working in a very male dominated field my PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) choices are very limited!  Mostly everything and I mean everything is geared towards men! Ugh! So very discouraging!

I have this hanging in my office and even my boss said today after he read it "love it"

Now regarding steel toed boots or shoes my very first pair was Red Wings which in turn are really terrible for women, they are sized based on a mans foot which is no good for women who have to be on their feet all day!

So after some searching and searching I found some great more feminine PPE.. here are just a few things ;-)

One of my very favorite pairs of steel toes!  They are baby blue but they come in pink and Moxie Trades  carries a ton of ladies PPE gear...

Moxie Trades LADIES Steel Toes! They come in pink also!

Skechers also makes a AWESOME Work shoe with alloy toes which are super light weight, I have purchased two pairs..... and they have discontinued both of these styles but they have others you can find them at Skechers Work.

First pair of Skechers Work steel toed slip ons! Wore these out!

Skechers Work shoes I have now love them and love the Alloy Toe!

My most recent steel toe purchase made just yesterday!!!

Justin Gypsy Steel Toes

Also I wear these every day.. love these safety glasses!

Chica Safety Glasses

Just to end it on a funny this occured today in my shop and it is good to know the guys don't consider me the high maintenance one....

Over the intercom at my shop.... "Jeff line 1" a few moments later from Jeff via intercom "For your information I am not the shop forman" Kenny, again via the intercom "They asked for maintenance" jeff replying for all to hear on the intercom "I am not maintenance either" and Kenny as classic oilfield humor via intercom "well you are high maintenance" = intercom silence and roaring laughter out of the shop!!!!

This post came about after so many of you "liked" my fb post on my new boots ;-) just wanted to let you working ladies to know you can still be a girl even though you are surrounded by testosterone!

As always ladies STAY SAFE .... TGIF is tomorrow and don't ruin it by an unsafe act ;-)

A day in the life -- October 2011

Several of you have asked and wanted to see some more pics of what I do what I see etc.. everyday out in the field well here is a little bit of what I have in my current and archive photos and I will try to explain a bit here and there on these as I can.  I will also as I collect more photos will occasionally post updates and more "A Day in the Life's" sound fair?

Is there anything you ladies specifically want to see? Or know about?  Let me know and I will do my best to try to cover it..

Spoilfield Wife (me) at a Pumping Unit while working for my former employer, Marathon Oil Company
In the picture above it had to have been taken sometime prior to August 2009 when mandatory FRC (Flame Resistant/Retardant Clothing) became mandatory onshore for us I want to say this was probably February of 2009 during our annual Tier 1 audits.  Tier 1 are safety audits that Marathon performs annually on location checking for everything from signage to machine guards, site security, equipment condition etc. We performed these annually on all of our locations which took over 5 months to complete then the corrective actions/repairs start usually for the remaining 6 months just to turn around and start all over again the following year.  It keeps everyone on their toes and all the locations in prime condition.

One of my many duties, teaching CPR, AED and First Aid to all the Oklahoma Ops employees

The guys giving me a hard time during class with the manikins

I have to say I got the guys back, I set all the manikins up at the conference room table and when they came in the next morning there where just shadows in the darkness of bodies sitting in chairs at the conference table!!! Man would I have loved to see their faces!

Yours truly, during an emergency response drill, thanks to my supervisor for taking such a flattering picture!

My previous field office in the background, I was making calls during an emergency response drill.  These are drills we worked on normally annually to ensure we could respond promptly and adequately in an emergency situation such as a tank failure or well control issue such as a blow out.  It was our "practice time" to correct anything we can find during this time is vital so make sure if an event actually occurred everything would run smoothly.

P&A - Plug & Abandonment job - on of my last official jobs before leaving Marathon.

A P&A which stands for Plug and Abandonment on a well is when either the well is dead, drained the reservoir of  hydrocarbons, ran the life of the well or the formation, normally this occurs on older wells that have ran their life span however this can also occur on new wells that were found to be unsuccessful in their potential to produce adequate hydrocarbons.  A cement plug is placed downhole to shut off any hydrocarbon bearing formations or freshwater aquifers to protect our environment and prevent ground water contamination.  However several regulatory agencies have different requirements on how wells have to be plugged and abandoned, and this can be federal, local, county, state, city etc.. you get my drift.  Here in Oklahoma the Oklahoma Corporation Commission is involved in this and overseas and certifies P&A wells. Funny thing is in this picture the welder is a close friend of mine from elementary school (we found each other again through the oilfield!) his wife was one of my sisters best childhood friends! It really is a small, small world!

During this operation my main task on location was to monitor the air with a 4-gas multi reader.  This was to ensure there wasn't any airborne contaminants that could pose a threat to anyone on location as well as monitoring the LEL (Lower Explosive Limit - the lowest concentration (percentage of a gas or a vapor in air capable of producing a flash of fire in the presence of an ignition source (arc, flame, heat).  At a concentration in air below the LEL there is not enough fuel to continue an explosion.  Concentrations lower than the LEL are too lean to explode.) this is vital when you have "hot work"  (Hot Work - is any process that can be a source of ignition when flammable material is present or can be a fire hazard regardless of the presence of flammable material in the workplace.  Common hot work processes are welding, soldering, cutting and brazing.)  to ensure everyone on the job site especially those up near the wellhead during the plugging operations stay safe.

Pumping Unit fencing & Signage for warning, danger etc.
Ok so remember the very first picture above? Where I was standing at the fence with the top of the railing painted green, but clearly you could see that I could easily "bonk" my head on it? Well another one of those simple task some people take for granted everyday but that I am in charge of.. I marked it with this cool UV resistant tubing in the yellow and black because of the low clearance on those fencing pieces.  Notice all the other signage and warnings?  These are required by several regulatory agencies but onshore the big one is OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration, but we also have to comply with API (American Petroleum Institute), ANSI (American National Standards Institute), OCC (Oklahoma Corporation Commission), EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), DOT (Department of Transportation), NFPA (National Fire Protection Agency), NEC (National Electric Code), BOA (Bureau of Airports), BLM (Bureau of Land Management, BIA (Bureau of Indian Affairs) and oh man so many others but just a few that have tricky requirements for specific signage on locations, for recognizing hazards and even on vehicles for transportation...

So for everyone out there who thinks the safety person is the one who has been here the longest or and by far even the worse, the person who has been injured and has a good story to tell, you can see from just the few things I posted my job runs the gamut, some days are more hectic than others but I can promise you I wouldn't trade it for the world!

Let me know if you like this post and comment on it below so I will know if you want to see more! Just takes a second to leave me a quick message! You can even log in with your facebook to do it, just click the comment area and from there you can use the facebook connect or yahoo or however you choose to log in and leave a comment! Thanks for all your support!!!

Have a great week and as always stay safe and sound ;-)

October = Halloween!

Halloween from whynotgif.com

So I love October and especially Halloween!!!! I believe I have more Halloween decorations than Christmas for outside the house!   Here is a video I took last year to see what Trick - or - Treaters were greeted to as they came up my walk way!  We have so many trick or treaters every year we run out of candy so I have what is called "the back-up candy" ;-) it is still good but it pays to be an early bird at the Combstead!

In the next few days I will be putting up the Halloween decorations again and in search of some new cool things... In the video you saw my talking headless man and my bubble fogger, yes it is a bubble machine that makes bubbles that turn into fog when they are popped! If you are a big Halloween Fan like I am this little machine is a must have!

Bubble Fogger Machine

Additional InformationAs the fog rolls in and the
cauldrons bubble, all the goblins know it's the
witching hour! Bewitch your guests with this
dramatic decor accessory and control your
haunted house.

Through the years I have had several different costumes as a child and an adult and I have been fortunate enough to have a AWESOME mother - in - law that sews like no other and she has made some phenomenal costumes for our daughter from genie to pirate and all were just so fantastic!

In honor of this most spooktakular month my new contest is about none other than HALLOWEEN!!!!! This is going to be run in conjunction with our facebook page and all the winners will be posted online.

The contest will run from October 4, 2011 to Saturday October  22nd at midnight.
It is a costume contest and I want to see pictures!!! These can be new or old pics from you now or you as a child and even pics of your children's costumes!!!

You may enter as many times as you like but each picture must be for a different category (meaning you cannot enter the same picture in two categories).
The categories are:
  • Teenie Halloweenie - girls and boys (ages 6 and under)
  • Schooling Spooks - girls and boys (ages 7 - 12)
  • Terrorizing Teens - gals and guys (ages 13-19)
  • Ghostly Grown-Up's - ladies & gentlemen (ages 20 and up) - how come being called a grown-up is so much more fun than being called an ADULT??? hahaha ok back on tack sorry!
  • Freaks and Geeks (any age, freaky, scary, ghoulish or geeky costumes welcome male/female)
  • Best Duo or Group (any age male/female costumes that go together as a couple or a group)
  • I'm Wearing that Next Year (yep just like it sounds, male/female any age)
  • Most Likely to get you Arrested (this one scares me to be honest, male/female any age - please keep in mind that I have to be careful what pictures are posted on facebook so if they are questionable I may not be able to post them directly on there)
  • Best 5 min. Throw Together (most original, homemade, male/female any age)
There will one winner from each of the above 9 categories (in the event of a tie we will hold a tie breaker to be decided on the day of tallying the voting results)

Then there will be one overall Ultimate Spoilfield Wife Screamer winner, all entrants are eligible for this and it will be determined by the entrant with the most votes overall.

Each entrant photo is only eligible for one prize, i.e. if you win overall you will not also win a category, just trying to make this as fair as possible for everyone involved! ;-)

How to win???? The picture in each category with the most "likes" on facebook will be the winner in each category and the picture with the most "likes" overall is the the overall winner.  This is really the best way to do it as you can only "like" a photo once and that way there is no one taking advantage of the voting ;-)

How to enter??? Please submit your photo to me at spoilfieldwife@cox.net in a jpg. format and also include your name, the entrants name (you need to be related to the person you are entering no random photos please) , age, and category you would like to enter.  Please only one photo per email you can enter multiple photos but please send separate photos!

As always if you have any questions post them below, email me or post on facebook! Let's have some fun with this one guys & gals!

Oh I almost forgot what do you win??? Well each category winner will win a AWESOME Halloween Gift Box filled with all kinds of Halloween goodies and the overall winner is in for an AWESOME Gift (I promise it is in the works but you won't be disappointed!!!!!!!! Stay safe today as you are going through pictures to enter and try not to scare yourself too bad ;-)

Fighting Oilfield Fires....

I know I have been promising this for a few weeks and I apologize for the delay, life kinda took over and had different plans for me!

Not many really understand the mechanics of oilfield fires, you can't just run in and slap some water on it expecting it to extinguish, however the media in all it's glory at times reports such craziness as this or makes comments about when the local fire departments will be in "to put some water on the flames".

Oilfield fires are a totally different beast than your average fire. So many reasons for this but to keep things basic and this post from going on for days and days I am just going to give a very basic overview of them.

The John Wayne movie, Hellfighters, based on the life of Red Adair the true pioneer in oil field firefighting and the inventor of the Athey Wagon...

did in a way glamorize the life and the job however it brought attention to a highly specialized, unique and incredibly dangerous job.

In my years in safety in the oilfield I have attended well control school as well as a week long class put on by Wild Well Control regarding oilfield fires I am not a oilfield firefighter nor do I claim to be one nor would I EVER want to do it.  You will see why in a little bit... read on...

This is a special breed of people who are willing to go in to a well that has blown out and the company has complete loss of well control with a small piece of tin in front of them , yes a small piece of tin or a tin shed ( watch the video below you will be shocked at all they use... to douse the fire and the ground in water, so they can bring in special equipment such as a Athey wagon..which has many attachments that aid in the firefighting tasks.

The Capping a Blowout  video shows exactly what an Athey wagon is and how it is used.. Interesting clip take a few min. to view it!

The following book also shows several instances and pictures and goes into way more detail regarding well control.  Interesting read and FREE on Google Books!!!

It is important to know that there are specialist in this and they are the ones who need to be utilized both onshore and offshore when big well control issues arise.  Boots N Coots formed by Red Adair has since merged with Halliburton.  The most common one out there today is Wild Well Control based out of Houston, TX.

This really is fascinating stuff that there are specialist for, most local fire departments do not have individuals trained nor do they have access to the equipment required to no only control the fire but also which is the main concern and that is control the well.

As always have a great week and stay safe peeps!
